SGI Legal Welcomes a new generation of Lawyers

Posted: 21st October 2015

Innovative Liverpool law firm appoints three trainee solicitors

After a two-stage selection process, SGI Legal has promoted three of its paralegals, Kevin Smyth, Nina Sumner and Terry Naylor, awarding them contracts to train as solicitors. Kevin, 27, Nina, 29 and Terry, 25, will spend the next 18 months training and gaining experience in different departments in the firm.

SGI Legal is a fresh concept in personal injury, and is only too happy to invest in its future lawyers, and the firm’s continued success, at a time where most in the sector are tightening their belts.

The economic crash of 2008 and the subsequent tightening of the domestic purse, spelled extremely tough times for wannabe trainees, with far fewer training contracts up for grabs than there are eligible law students. In 2013, 6,171 students had completed the Legal Practice Course, a pre-requisite to a training contract, however just 5,514 trainee solicitors were registered. And this figure doesn’t include the hordes of unlucky applicants from previous years.

To add insult to injury, pun 100% intended, the Ministry of Justice’s changes to the law around no-win no-fee deals and cuts of almost 60% to solicitors’ fees, has made personal injury firms a particularly tough place to do business, causing many to close their doors for good.

Nina, originally from Whalley in Lancashire, said “Many firms have little interest in developing their law graduates. I’ve worked at national firms who have had no internal training contract opportunities for a number of years and yet they continue to dangle that metaphorical carrot and stick as a motivator.

“I’m very honoured to have been offered this opportunity after only a few months at SGI; they are to be commended for what they are giving back to the legal profession. I am looking forward to a long and happy career with such a progressive firm.”

Kevin, from Ballyfermot in Dublin, who is currently nearing the end of his Legal Practice Course, said “Gaining a training contract at SGI means the world to me especially because I am still studying. It is great that my hard work and commitment is recognised by the board at SGI. I know that SGI has the potential to keep getting stronger and I see my long-term future here.”
Terry, from Liverpool said, “I feel honoured to be offered a training contract at SGI Legal. Although the Legal sector has suffered large setbacks within recent years, I am proud to be part of a firm that continues to grow from strength to strength. I look forward to a long and successful career within the SGI team.”

Simon Gibson, Managing Partner, said “We are fortunate to have a number of young lawyers at SGI who have great potential and are already adding considerable value to the business and our clients. Kevin, Nina and Terry are exceptional performers and have shown a high degree of commitment to their legal careers. We are delighted to support them in their development towards achieving their full potential.”
